Unlike Athens, where taxis are everywhere, Santorini's taxi count is fixed and doesn't scale with demand, so queues of 30 minutes or more at the airport rank are normal in summer, and hailing one in Fira or Oia on the street is frequently impossible outside a hotel calling on your behalf. The practical takeaway: pre-book your airport and port transfers in both directions, rather than assuming you'll simply find a taxi when you need one.

Santorini Thira International Airport (JTR) sits about 6 km from Fira. Taxis here aren't metered — prices are fixed by route and negotiated before you set off, so agree the fare before getting in.

Santorini's Two Ports — They're Not the Same

Athinios Port is the working ferry port, used by the boats connecting Santorini to Piraeus, Crete and the rest of the Cyclades — about 10 km from Fira on a winding coastal road. Traffic here gets heavy around ferry arrivals and departures, especially May through September, so allow extra time. The Old Port, sometimes called Fira Port or Skala, is a different place entirely — it's where cruise ship tenders dock, directly below Fira on the caldera cliff. There's no real taxi access down at the water; the way up is the cable car, a mule ride, or 587 zigzag steps on foot. If you're arriving by cruise, you're taking the cable car up before any taxi or transfer becomes relevant.

Getting Between Villages — Oia, Imerovigli, Fira, Kamari, Perissa

The public bus network is genuinely good and inexpensive, but it's a hub-and-spoke system centred on Fira, not point-to-point. To get from Oia to Kamari, for example, you'll typically change buses at the Fira station rather than travel directly. A private transfer skips that change entirely — which matters more than it sounds, given how few taxis are actually available to fill the gap if you miss a connection. Worth knowing if you're staying in Oia or Imerovigli specifically: many hotels sit along pedestrian-only pathways or cliffside steps, so expect a short walk with your bags from wherever the car can actually stop.
