What Kind of Athens Transfer Do You Need?

Athens transfers generally fall into four categories, depending on where your trip starts and ends: airport to hotel, airport to port, port to city centre, or a one-way trip from Athens out to a mainland destination like Nafplio or Meteora. Each has a different price range and typical duration — all four are covered below.

Airport Transfers

Athens International Airport (ATH) sits about 33 km southeast of the city centre — expect 35 to 45 minutes by road outside rush hour, longer during weekday peak traffic between 7–9am and 3–7pm.

Expect to pay €35–55 for a private transfer between the airport and central Athens (Syntagma, Plaka, Monastiraki, Koukaki), with prices creeping toward the top of that range for hotels further out — Glyfada and the southern coast, or Kifisia to the north.

One thing worth knowing before you compare prices: Athens Airport taxis don't run on the meter for this route. Greek law sets a fixed flat fare of €40 during the day (5am–midnight) and €55 at night (midnight–5am) between the airport and central Athens, covering tolls and luggage — no separate charges. That means a pre-booked private transfer usually isn't cheaper than a taxi; the real advantage is certainty — a guaranteed driver, flight tracking, and no queue at the rank, arranged before you land rather than found on arrival.

Athens Ports — Piraeus, Rafina & Lavrio

Athens is served by three ports, and which one you need depends on your ferry — not on which is closest to your hotel.

Notice that Rafina and Lavrio both sit closer to the airport than to the city centre. If your ferry departs from either, check whether a direct airport-to-port transfer saves you a detour through Athens — it usually does.

Athens to the Mainland — Day Trips & One-Way Transfers

Athens is also the natural starting point for several mainland destinations. These routes are priced differently from airport or port transfers — usually per vehicle for the full one-way or round-trip distance, with a wait-and-return option available if you're doing a day trip rather than relocating.
