Table of Contents
The best hotels in Kos are not spread evenly around the island. They cluster in six places, and picking the right one matters more than picking the right hotel: Kos Town and Lambi for walking to dinner, Psalidi and Agios Fokas for big resorts on the cycle path into town, Tigaki and Marmari for the shallow family beaches, Mastichari for the wind and the boats to Kalymnos, Kardamena for nightlife, and the Kefalos bay for the island's best water.
Kos has more large all-inclusive resorts than almost anywhere else in the Dodecanese, from Ikos Aria on the Kefalos bay to LUXME Kos, the reimagined Grecotel Kos Imperial in Psalidi. It also has a quieter layer most package brochures skip: a 1920s Italian-era building turned into eight suites in the middle of Kos Town, adults-only hideaways in Marmari and on the Kefalos hills, and family-run studios in Mastichari and Kefalos.
Five of us at Greek Trip Planner have spent time on Kos. Below are the hotels we would book, grouped by area, with who each one suits and what to know before you pay. Hotels that recur on the island's best independent shortlists are here; the anonymous package blocks are not.
For the rest of the island, see our Kos travel guide, things to do in Kos and best restaurants in Kos.

Where to Stay in Kos: The Areas at a Glance
Kos Town and Lambi. The only place on the island where you can walk to the harbour, the castle, the ancient agora and a choice of restaurants every night. Lambi is the beach strip that starts where the town ends, about 3 km north. Best for first-timers, couples and anyone without a car.
Psalidi and Agios Fokas. The resort coast south-east of town, lined with large beach hotels and joined to the centre by the flat seafront cycle path. You get resort facilities and can still ride or take a taxi into town for dinner.
Tigaki and Marmari. The north coast's long, shallow sandy beaches, the classic family choice. Afternoons can be windy in July and August when the meltemi blows, which windsurfers love and sunbathers do not.
Mastichari. A low-key village on the north-west coast, close to the airport, with a sandy beach, a steady wind and the little port for boats to Kalymnos and Pserimos.
Kardamena. The south coast's party resort, with bars that run late and a young crowd in high summer, and a handful of big resorts on the beaches either side. Boats leave from its harbour for Nisyros.
Kefalos and the southwest. The quietest corner of Kos, with Paradise Beach, Agios Stefanos and its islet chapel on the sheltered Kefalos bay. The beach water here is the island's best; the trade-off is a 40-minute drive to Kos Town.
Best Hotels in Kos Town and Lambi
Albergo Gelsomino (Kos Town)
A 1920s Italian-era building in the centre of Kos Town restored into just eight suites, with its own private beach deck. It is the most characterful place to stay on the island and the one we would choose for a short, car-free stay built around the town's restaurants and ruins.

Best Hotels in Kos by Traveller Type
All-inclusive. Ikos Aria on the Kefalos bay is the top end; LUXME Kos in Psalidi is the big all-inclusive closest to town; Mitsis Blue Domes and Mitsis Norida cover Kardamena; Kipriotis Aqualand adds a water park. Outside July and August, booking the room yourself often beats a package price. Our guide to an all-inclusive trip to Greece explains when the deal is worth it.
Adults-only. OKU Kos and D'Andrea Lagoon in Marmari, Aqua Blu, Diamond Deluxe, Lango, Theros and White Pearls in Lambi, KOIA in Agios Fokas, Atlantica Belvedere in Kardamena and White Rock on the Kefalos hills. Kos has a wide adults-only choice, and it is spread across every area of the island.
Families and water slides. Astir Odysseus in Tigaki for the best all-round family resort, Kipriotis Aqualand for a hotel water park, Neptune in Mastichari for teenagers, and Mitsis Norida in Kardamena for slides on a budget. For a big day out, the Lido Water Park near Mastichari is open to everyone. Base yourselves on the north coast for the shallowest beaches; our Greece with kids guide has more family-tested islands.
Luxury, 5-star and spa. Ikos Aria, LUXME Kos, OKU Kos, KOIA, Lango and Aqua Blu are the island's top tier; Lango's Kocoon, Aqua Blu's Tamaris and Diamond Deluxe's Mazarin are the spas to book a treatment at even if you stay elsewhere.
Honeymoon and couples. Albergo Gelsomino for a town break, OKU Kos or D'Andrea Lagoon for a north-coast resort, White Rock of Kos for seclusion, and Lango for a private-pool suite within walking distance of the harbour.
Budget. Hotel Sonia and the Kos Town apartments, Andreas Studios in Mastichari, Nissia Kamares in Kardamena and Chrysoula in Kefalos. Kefalos and the villages are cheaper than the town and the resort strips.
Villas and apartments. TAF Boutique Villas has contemporary villas with private pools, the best option for groups splitting a budget, and Pantheon and Bristol Apartments are the self-catering picks in Kos Town.
Without a car. Stay in Kos Town, Lambi or Psalidi. The flat seafront cycle path and the town buses connect all three, and the resort areas further out need a car, taxis or a lot of bus waiting.
Vegan and plant-based. The big all-inclusive brands on Kos, TUI BLUE among them, label plant-based dishes at their buffets; our best vegan hotels in Greece guide covers which groups do it well.
Practical Tips for Booking a Hotel in Kos
When to book. July and August sell out months ahead, especially the adults-only and small boutique hotels. In May, June, September and October, prices drop noticeably and the sea is still warm.
Getting from the airport. Kos airport sits in the middle of the island near Antimachia, so Mastichari and Kardamena are closest and Kos Town, Psalidi and Kefalos are furthest. See our Kos transfer guide and the routes to Kardamena, Psalidi and Tigaki.
Tourist tax. Every Kos hotel adds the Greek climate resilience fee per room per night, set by star rating and season and paid at the property. Our Greece tourist tax guide has every rate.
Wind. The north coast faces the summer meltemi, so Tigaki, Marmari and Mastichari can be choppy in July and August afternoons; the Kefalos bay and Kardamena are more sheltered.
Where not to stay. Avoid Kardamena if you want quiet nights in high summer, avoid the far southwest if you want to eat in Kos Town every evening, and avoid rooms right above the harbour bars in Kos Town if you are a light sleeper.
When you have chosen an area, browse every Kos hotel on Booking.com to check live availability.
