Crete Transfer Guide: Two Airports, and Why That Changes Everything

Crete is served by two separate airports roughly 140 km apart, and which one you land at determines your entire transfer plan. Heraklion Airport (HER) covers central and eastern Crete — the city itself in about 10–15 minutes for €19–25, out to Hersonissos, Malia, Agios Nikolaos and Elounda. Chania Airport (CHQ) covers the west — Chania town and on to Rethymno. Landing at the wrong airport for your resort can add two hours to your trip, so check this before you book flights, not after.

Heraklion Airport — the Busier of the Two

Nikos Kazantzakis Airport sits about 5 km east of Heraklion city, right on the coast, with most onward journeys running along the E75 north coast highway. A taxi into the city centre runs €19–25 and takes 10–15 minutes, roughly the same either way you book it. Further out, the pattern flips — pre-booked transfers are often cheaper than a metered taxi once the distance grows, since transfer companies set fixed competitive rates while taxi meters simply accumulate with distance.

Hersonissos, around 25 minutes away, runs about €32. Malia, around 30 minutes, runs €42–48. Agios Nikolaos, about an hour, runs €70–90. Elounda, similar distance, runs €75–80. Crossing to Chania is the longest transfer on the island from this airport — about 2 hours, €150–240.

Chania Airport — Serves the West, But Isn't in Chania

Chania International Airport isn't actually in Chania town — it sits at Sternes, in Akrotiri, about 14 km east of the town itself, named after the Sfakian hero Ioannis Daskalogiannis. This is the right airport for Chania town and Rethymno, but budget the extra distance when timing your transfer — some travelers assume the airport is closer than it actually is.

Crossing the Island: Heraklion to Chania

This is a genuinely long transfer, not a quick hop between two nearby cities. The two are about 140 km apart along the north coast, and a private taxi or transfer realistically costs €150–240 and takes around 2 hours. Multiple independent quotes cluster in this range — watch for headline "per passenger" prices from some operators that only apply if you fill an entire minibus, which understate what a couple or small family will actually pay. The KTEL public bus is the budget alternative, about 2 hours 45 minutes. Heraklion has two separate bus stations — Bus Station A near the Old Port and Bus Station B near the city walls — so confirm which one your onward bus actually uses.

Two Separate Port Systems

Heraklion's port sits in the city itself, separate from the airport, and handles both cruise ships and ferries to Piraeus. Chania's port is at Souda Bay, a genuinely large natural harbour that also hosts a NATO naval base, about 55 km west of Rethymno. If you're arriving by ferry rather than flying, your transfer plan depends on which port, not which airport.

If You're Headed to a Resort, Not Just the City

For resort destinations beyond the airport cities, the KTEL bus stops making sense on its own, since you'd first bus into the city centre and then need a second connection — often adding 1–2 hours total. For anywhere beyond a simple airport-to-city hop, a taxi or pre-booked transfer is the practical choice for most travelers, not the budget bus.
