Lefkada earns its reputation through one specific visual: the west coast beach.
Seen from the road above Porto Katsiki, or from a boat off Egremni, the combination of white limestone cliffs, the particular blue-green of the Ionian at this point, and the absolute absence of resort infrastructure gives the island a quality of wildness that most accessible Greek islands have lost. These beaches are not easy to reach. Porto Katsiki requires a long drive and a steep staircase.
Egremni has no road at all since the 2015 landslide destroyed the previous track. Agiofili is a short walk from the road but rarely crowded. The difficulty is, in each case, part of what makes them extraordinary.
The island is roughly 35 kilometres long from the bridge to Cape Doukato in the south, and about 15 kilometres at its widest. The east coast is sheltered, greener, with the tourist centre of Nydri and the marina at Lefkada Town. The west coast is exposed, white, spectacular, facing the open Ionian. The south — Vasiliki and the cape — is where the wind happens. The interior is olive groves, mountain villages, and the particular quiet of a Greek island that still has a significant permanent population and an agricultural identity.
It is connected to the mainland by a swing bridge that opens every few hours for boats passing through the lagoon channel — a detail that gives arriving on Lefkada by road a ritual quality that it wouldn't have otherwise.

Nydri Boat Cruise: Porto Katsiki, Egremni & Agiofili
Type: Full-day boat cruise, west coast beaches, swimming
Time needed: Full day (approx. 8 hours)
Departure: Port of Nydri, 9:30 AM; exchange voucher at St Maura Travel on main street
Cost: From €35–50 per person
Best time: June–September; avoid days with strong west wind (boats won't land)
The boat cruise from Nydri to Lefkada's west coast beaches is the most popular day trip on the island and the most efficient way to see Porto Katsiki and Egremni — two beaches with no practical road access that between them represent some of the most extraordinary coastal scenery in the Ionian.
The route departs from Nydri harbour, passes through the Meganisi channel, rounds the southern cape, and approaches the west coast from the sea — the way these beaches were always meant to be seen. Egremni is the first major swimming stop: two hours on a long white sand beach below white cliffs, with no facilities and no crowd noise, just the sea and the limestone. Porto Katsiki follows — the boat anchors offshore and passengers swim to the beach or float in the turquoise water beside the cliffs. Agiofili is the final stop, a sheltered beach before the return to Nydri.
An important note: when the west wind is strong, boats anchor offshore at Porto Katsiki rather than landing — swimmers reach the beach from the water. The beach is compact and fills quickly with combined arrivals from multiple boats in high season. The experience is still exceptional; the expectations should be calibrated accordingly.

Good to know: Bring your own snacks, water, and sunscreen — there are no facilities at Egremni and limited facilities at Porto Katsiki. The beaches have no sunbeds. In strong westerly winds, the boat may substitute alternative beaches or adjust the itinerary; this is a safety decision by the captain. Book in advance in July and August.
Best for: All visitors to Lefkada — the west coast beaches are the island's defining experience and the boat trip is the best way to see them. Families, couples, and groups.
Wooden Boat Cruise to Meganisi & Skorpios
Type: Day cruise, Papanikolis Cave, Meganisi village, Skorpios, swimming
Time needed: 6.5 hours
Departure: Nydri harbour
Cost: From €35–50 per person
Best time: May–October
The cruise to Meganisi and Skorpios from Nydri is the island-hopping alternative to the west coast beach trip — quieter water, more history, and the chance to stop at a proper village for lunch. The boat departs Nydri in the morning, cruises down the Meganisi channel, and enters the Papanikolis Cave — the second-largest sea cave in Greece, historically used as a hiding place for the Greek submarine during World War II. The boat goes right inside the cave; passengers swim, snorkel, and photograph the scale of the limestone interior.
The second stop is Lakka beach on Meganisi for a morning swim in exceptionally clear water, followed by Vathi village — a traditional harbourside settlement of stone houses and narrow alleys where the boat anchors for 90 minutes of free time. Lunch at the waterfront tavernas here is genuinely one of the better restaurant stops on any boat trip in the Ionian. The afternoon stop at Skorpios — the private island formerly owned by Aristotle Onassis and still one of the most famous private estates in Greece — is a circumnavigation and close approach, not a landing, but the island's character (wooded, manicured, utterly private) is clear from the water.
"The experience was absolutely amazing. Meganisi was absolutely stunning with wonderful food there too," writes one reviewer. Another describes the crew as providing "a more personalised service" on this smaller boat format.

Good to know: This is a smaller boat than the large excursion vessels — capacity is more limited, giving the trip a more personal feel. Lunch in Vathi is paid separately at the tavernas. Snorkelling gear is useful at Lakka beach and inside the cave.
Best for: Travellers who prefer a quieter, more intimate boat experience to the large excursion boats. History and nature enthusiasts, those who have already done the west coast beach trip and want a different day on the water.
Sailing Through History: Ancient Warship Cruise with BBQ
Type: Unique sailing experience, replica ancient warship, Meganisi, beach BBQ
Time needed: Full day
Departure: Nydri harbour
Cost: From €65–80 per person (includes beach BBQ)
Best time: May–October
This is the most distinctive boat experience in Lefkada: a full-day cruise on a locally built replica of an ancient Greek warship, operated by a family from Nydri who built the vessel themselves and sail it with historical context woven through the day. The 45-square-metre sail is hoisted by crew and passengers together; the guides explain Homeric mythology, Greek naval history, and the geography of the islands as the ship moves through them.
The route visits the Papanikolis Cave (with swimming inside), a secluded beach for the BBQ lunch — traditional Greek food prepared on board and served on the beach — and the islands of Lefkada and Meganisi. The experience begins with seasonal fruit and ouzo with olives as the ship leaves Nydri. There is nothing like it on the other Ionian islands; it is a genuinely unique offering.
Reviews are exceptional: "Everything about this trip was amazing — professional, knowledgeable guides, amazing locations, food and service. After travelling around Europe with many tours, this was by far the best. A must if you're visiting Lefkada." Another writes: "Superb from start to finish. Really informative, entertaining and relaxing. Excellent agenda. Food and service top notch."

Good to know: The ancient warship replica is a working sailing vessel — passengers participate in hoisting the sail. The BBQ lunch is included in the price and is served on a secluded beach. This tour books out quickly in high season; advance booking is strongly recommended.
Best for: History enthusiasts, travellers who want something genuinely different from the standard boat trip format, couples, and anyone who has been to Lefkada before and wants a new perspective on the islands.
Blue Cave Kayak Tour with Snorkelling & Greek Snack
Type: Guided sea kayak, cave exploration, snorkelling, Greek picnic
Time needed: Half day (approx. 3.5–4 hours)
Departure: Mikros Gialos beach, near Poros village, south Lefkada
Cost: From €40–55 per person (includes snack/picnic)
Best time: May–October; morning departures recommended for calmer water
The Blue Cave kayak tour departs from Mikros Gialos, a small beach on the southern coast with excellent water quality, and paddles through the sea caves of Rouda Bay — one of the clearest and most biologically diverse stretches of water in the Ionian. The route includes the Blue Cave itself: a sea cave where the light filters through the water in the particular way that gives it its colour, and where the guides explain the marine ecology and the geology of the surrounding limestone coast.
Beyond the Blue Cave, the tour includes snorkelling stops, a visit to Peristeria beach (only accessible by water), and a Greek snack picnic during a rest stop — fruit, local cheese, olives, and crackers served at water's edge. The whole experience is guided throughout by staff who are consistently praised for their friendliness, patience, and ability to make first-time kayakers feel capable and safe.
"We had a wonderful kayaking experience," writes one reviewer. "The guides were incredibly helpful and super friendly. We had a delicious traditional Greek snack and got to do some snorkelling. Even got to kayak alongside some dolphins." Another calls the Blue Cave "impressive" and the guides "informative and funny."

Good to know: Suitable for ages 8+ with swimming ability. Bring water — guides recommend at least 1 litre per person as you paddle quite actively. Morning departures have calmer seas; afternoon wind can create choppy conditions in exposed sections. This is a double kayak tour — couples share a kayak with one person paddling from each end.
Best for: Active travellers, couples, small groups, and anyone who wants a physical, nature-focused half-day rather than a passive boat experience. Excellent option to pair with a beach afternoon at Mikros Gialos after the tour.
Porto Katsiki, Egremni & the West Coast Beaches
Type: Beach, scenic viewpoint, swimming
Time needed: Half day to full day
Distance: Porto Katsiki is 40 km from Lefkada Town (approx. 45 min)
Cost: Free entry; parking €2–5; sunbeds not available (unorganised beaches)
Best time: May–October; mornings for the best light on the cliffs
Porto Katsiki is the photograph of Lefkada. From the car park above the beach, the view takes in the full arc of white pebbles, the vertical white limestone cliffs, and the water below — turquoise in the shallows, deepening to cobalt further out. The descent to the beach is by wooden steps cut into the cliff (approximately 100 steps; steep but manageable for most visitors). The beach is unorganised — no sunbeds, no beach bar, just the pebbles, the cliff, and the sea. It fills in July and August but manages to absorb the crowds better than the view from above suggests it should.
Egremni is 15 minutes south of Porto Katsiki by road — though the beach itself is currently accessible only by boat, following the 2015 earthquake and subsequent landslides that destroyed the old access steps. The view from above the cliff is still worth the drive. For swimming access, the boat trip from Nydri is the reliable option.
Kathisma beach, on the northwest coast (35 minutes from Lefkada Town), is the most accessible of the west coast beaches and has full facilities — sun loungers, beach bars, restaurants on the sand. It is beautiful, consistently breezy in the afternoon (good for body surfing), and the best option for visitors who want an organised west coast beach experience without committing to a boat trip.
Good to know: The road to Porto Katsiki is twisting and narrow in its final stretch — drive carefully. There are no facilities at Porto Katsiki beach. Bring water, food, and everything you need for the day. On windy days the sea is rough and landing may not be safe; check conditions before the drive down.
Best for: Every visitor to Lefkada — Porto Katsiki is essential. The boat trip from Nydri is the most complete way to experience the west coast; driving there is more independent but misses Egremni entirely.
Vasiliki: Windsurfing, Wingfoiling & the South Bay
Type: Watersports, windsurfing lessons and hire, wingfoiling, SUP, beach
Time needed: Half day to full week
Distance: 38 km from Lefkada Town (approx. 40 min)
Cost: Equipment hire from €35/hour; lessons from €50/hour; beginner courses from €150 for 3 days
Best time: June–September (wind builds from noon; mornings calm)
Vasiliki is one of Europe's most respected windsurfing destinations and the reason that a significant proportion of Lefkada's visitors are sport rather than beach tourists. The thermal wind system — generated when the surrounding mountains heat up under the summer sun and draw in a steady breeze from the sea — creates consistent conditions of 15–25 knots in the afternoon, almost every day from June to September. Mornings are calm and warm; the wind arrives like clockwork around midday.
Club Vass, established in 1987 and with over 300 boards for hire, is the largest watersports operation in Vasiliki and one of the best-equipped windsurf schools in the Mediterranean. Surf School Vasiliki, run by two brothers from a hotel complex right on the water, offers windsurfing, wingfoiling, and SUP lessons with certified instructors. Both are walk-in facilities where equipment hire by the hour, day, or week is available without pre-booking in the early season; in July and August advance reservation is advisable.
Vasiliki itself — beyond the windsurfing — is a genuine Lefkadian fishing village with a good harbour taverna scene, a small sandy beach, and the particular atmosphere of a place that exists for something real rather than purely for tourism.
Good to know: Mornings at Vasiliki are calm — ideal for beginners and families using the beach. Afternoon wind builds strongly and is best left to experienced riders or those under instruction. The beach accommodates windsurfers and non-surfers simultaneously. Accommodation in Vasiliki tends to book out early in season — plan ahead.
Best for: Windsurfers and wingfoilers of all levels, travellers who want an active holiday base in the south of the island, and anyone who enjoys watching world-class windsurfing from a taverna table.
Practical Information
Getting to Lefkada:
Lefkada is accessible by road via the swing bridge from Preveza (10 minutes) and the mainland E55. Nearest airport is Aktion (PVK) at Preveza — 20 minutes from the bridge — with seasonal direct flights from the UK, Germany, and other European cities, plus domestic connections from Athens (55 minutes). No ferry is required.
Getting around:
A car is strongly recommended. Lefkada is long and the main attractions are spread across the island. Car hire is available from the airport, Lefkada Town, and Nydri. Scooters work for the east coast; the mountain roads to the west coast require care but are paved throughout. Nydri-based boat trips are the only practical way to reach Egremni.
When to go:
June and September are the best months — full services, warm water, far fewer visitors than July–August. July–August is peak season with maximum boat trips and activities, but also the busiest beaches and highest accommodation prices. May and October are quieter with most services operating; sea temperature is cooler in May.
Where to stay:
Lefkada Town suits those exploring the island by car. Nydri is best for boat trips and east coast restaurants. Vasiliki is ideal for windsports. Agios Nikitas (northwest coast) is the most atmospheric small village on the island. See Best Greek Islands to Visit for regional comparison.
