If you are planning to visit Greece in April, this date shapes everything. Holy Week is the week before Easter — a period when the whole country enters a specific rhythm of preparation, observance, and gradually building anticipation. Easter Sunday itself is followed by Easter Monday (13 April 2026), making it a four-day public holiday from Good Friday to Monday. Businesses reduce hours. Ferries fill up. Families travel. Small towns that are quiet for the rest of the year become the centre of their region's most important event.

When Is Greek Easter? Dates and Why They Differ
Greek Orthodox Easter 2026: Sunday, 12 April
Good Friday 2026: Friday, 10 April
Holy Saturday 2026: Saturday, 11 April
Easter Monday 2026: Monday, 13 April
Greek Easter follows the Orthodox Christian calendar, which uses the Julian calendar for calculating the date of Easter rather than the Gregorian calendar used by Western Christianity. The difference between the two calendars currently runs to 13 days, and the Orthodox Church also requires that Easter fall after Jewish Passover — which adds further divergence.
The result is that Greek Easter and Western Easter fall on the same date only roughly every four or five years. The last alignment was April 20, 2025 (a rare coincidence). In 2026, Western Easter is April 5 and Greek Easter is April 12 — one week apart. In some years they are up to five weeks apart.

Holy Week in Greece: Day by Day
Holy Week — Megali Evdomada (Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα), the Great Week — is the seven days from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. Each day carries specific traditions, church services, and rituals that have been continuous for centuries.
Palm Sunday (Sunday, 5 April 2026)
The week begins with Palm Sunday, commemorating Christ's entry into Jerusalem. Palm branches and olive branches are distributed at church. Children process with branches. Crucially for fasting observers, Palm Sunday is one of the two days during Lent when fish is permitted — so restaurants that have been serving mostly vegetarian and seafood fare all week become briefly more generous.
Holy Monday to Holy Wednesday
The first three days of Holy Week carry daily evening services in every church. The interior is draped in black and purple — the colours of mourning. The atmosphere in churches during these services is among the most atmospheric in the Greek Orthodox calendar: incense, Byzantine chant, candlelight, and a congregation observing something that feels both ancient and immediate.
For visitors, attending an evening service on any of these days is possible and welcomed. You do not need to participate — standing at the back and observing is perfectly appropriate.
Holy Thursday (9 April 2026)
Holy Thursday is the day of domestic preparation. Two things happen in Greek households on this day:
Red eggs are dyed. Greek Easter eggs are not chocolate. They are real hard-boiled eggs dyed deep red — red symbolising the blood of Christ and the joy of the Resurrection. They will be cracked against each other (the tsougrisma game) at the midnight meal and eaten on Easter Sunday.
Tsoureki is baked. Tsoureki (τσουρέκι) is the braided sweet bread of Easter — enriched with eggs and butter, flavoured with mahlab (a spice from cherry kernels) and mastiha (Chios mastic), shaped into long braids. It appears in every bakery from Holy Thursday onward and is one of the most distinctive flavours of the Easter season.
Good Friday (10 April 2026)
Good Friday — Megali Paraskevi (Μεγάλη Παρασκευή) — is the most solemn day of the year in Greece. The church bells ring throughout the day. Businesses close by midday. Meat is avoided entirely.
The defining ritual of Good Friday is the Epitaphios procession. Inside every Orthodox church, a wooden bier representing the tomb of Christ — the Epitaphios — is decorated with flowers by the women of the parish on Holy Thursday evening. On Good Friday evening, the Epitaphios is carried out of the church in procession through the streets of the town or village, led by the priest and followed by the entire community carrying candles.
The procession moves slowly through streets that have been lit and decorated for the occasion. The smell of incense, the sound of the burial hymns, the flicker of hundreds of candles in the night air — this is one of the most genuinely moving public rituals in Greece, and it happens in every single town and village simultaneously.
If you are anywhere in Greece on Good Friday evening, go outside at around 9pm and follow the sound of the bells.
Holy Saturday (11 April 2026)
Holy Saturday is a day of transition — from mourning to anticipation. The first half of the day is still quiet. But by evening the energy shifts.
11pm: Restaurants and tavernas fill as people break their Friday fast with seafood — the last meal before the Resurrection. Grilled octopus, calamari, prawns. The atmosphere is warm but still restrained.
Before midnight: People begin gathering at churches across the country, dressed in their good clothes. They carry white candles. Inside, the church is entirely dark.
Midnight: The priest enters from the altar carrying the Holy Flame — a candle lit from the eternal flame at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, which arrives in Greece each year by special flight and is distributed to every church. The lights in the church go out completely. In the darkness, the priest's candle is the only light.
Christos Anesti: At midnight exactly, the priest chants "Christos Anesti" — Christ is Risen. The congregation responds: "Alithos Anesti" — He has truly risen. The candle flame is passed from person to person until the whole church — and then the whole square outside — is a sea of light. Fireworks explode. Church bells ring. People embrace.
This is the Anastasi. If you experience nothing else of Greek Easter, experience this.
After midnight: People return home carrying their candles — trying to keep the flame lit all the way, to draw a cross with the smoke above their front door as a blessing for the house. Then the family gathers for the traditional midnight meal: magiritsa soup and the tsougrisma egg-cracking game.
Easter Sunday (12 April 2026)
Easter Sunday is when Greece collectively exhales. The long fast is over. The lamb goes on the spit.
In gardens, courtyards, and rooftops across the country, whole lambs have been skewered since early morning and are slowly turning over charcoal. The men tend the spit and drink raki. The women make salads, set tables, lay out the red eggs. By midday the smell of roasting lamb has spread across every neighbourhood.
The Easter Sunday meal is the biggest family gathering of the year — more so than Christmas for most Greek families. The table extends into the garden or the courtyard. Music plays. People eat for hours.

Greek Easter Food: What to Eat and When
Easter food in Greece has a specific logic — the progression from Lenten restriction to the abundance of Easter Sunday is as important as the individual dishes.
Magiritsa — Μαγειρίτσα
The traditional soup eaten after the midnight Resurrection service. Made from lamb offal (intestines, lungs, heart), rice or orzo, spring onions, dill, and finished with an avgolemono (egg-lemon) sauce. The purpose is to ease the stomach back into meat-eating after 40 days of fasting.
It is not a dish for everyone, and many modern Greek families substitute it with a simpler lamb soup or avgolemono. But at a traditional family table, magiritsa at 1am after the Anastasi is an experience worth having.
Kokoretsi — Κοκορέτσι
Lamb or goat intestines wrapped around a spit with seasoned offal, grilled slowly alongside the lamb. Deeply smoky, aromatic with herbs, and controversial for the uninitiated but beloved by most Greeks. Usually started even earlier than the main lamb on Easter Sunday morning.
Lamb on the Spit — Αρνί στη Σούβλα
The centrepiece of Easter Sunday. A whole lamb, skewered on a long metal rod, turned slowly over charcoal for four to five hours. The preparation begins at dawn; the meal happens at midday. In many regions, the lamb is cooked in the oven instead (arni sto fourno) — equally traditional.
Red Eggs — Κόκκινα Αυγά
Hard-boiled eggs dyed deep red, dyed on Holy Thursday and present on every Easter table from midnight Saturday onward. The tsougrisma game: two people each hold a red egg and tap them against each other, tip to tip then base to base. The person whose egg remains uncracked will have good luck for the year.
Tsoureki — Τσουρέκι
The braided sweet bread of Easter. Rich, lightly spiced, with a distinctive fragrance from mastiha and mahlab. Available from bakeries from Holy Thursday onward, often with a red egg baked into the top. One of the great Greek Easter foods and worth buying from a good bakery rather than a supermarket.

The Best Places to Experience Greek Easter
The best Easter experience is not in Athens. The city empties out as Greeks travel to their home villages and islands. The richest experiences are in smaller communities where the full population participates and the rituals play out in visible, communal form.
Patmos
The island of Patmos — where the Book of Revelation was written — has the most spiritually significant Easter in Greece. The Monastery of Saint John the Theologian has been observing Holy Week continuously since the eleventh century. The Good Friday Epitaphios procession through the narrow streets of Chora, lit by torches and candles against the Aegean night, is one of the most extraordinary public rituals in Europe.
Corfu
Corfu has a unique Easter tradition: on Holy Saturday morning, residents throw clay pots filled with water from their balconies — the botides tradition — representing the new vessels of the coming year and the breaking of the old. The streets below fill with shattered clay and crowds who have specifically come to watch. Corfu's Easter is also one of the most musically rich in Greece, with brass bands playing throughout Holy Week.
Hydra
On the small car-free island of Hydra, the Good Friday Epitaphios procession takes place by torchlight through the narrow port streets, with the funeral bier carried to the sea and back — a unique variation that reflects the island's maritime history.
Arachova
The mountain village of Arachova, near Delphi, extends its Easter celebrations over three days because the village saint's day (Saint George) often falls during or just after Easter. The result is a continuous festival of feasting, dancing, and celebration that can last from Easter Sunday through the following Tuesday.
Leonidio
The Peloponnese village of Leonidio is famous for its Easter Saturday tradition: at midnight, as the Anastasi is proclaimed, large paper lanterns (called aeras) are released from the church and float into the sky above the village, lit from below by burning cloth — a spectacle visible from miles away.
Thessaloniki and Northern Greece
Greece's second city has a major Easter tradition in the neighbourhood of Ano Poli (Upper Town), where the old Byzantine quarter holds one of the most atmospheric Epitaphios processions on the mainland.

The most distinctive difference is the midnight Anastasi service — there is no equivalent in Western Christian practice. The combination of complete darkness, the single flame, and the gradual lighting of thousands of candles as the Resurrection is proclaimed is specific to Eastern Orthodoxy and specifically powerful.
Practical Travel Information for Greek Easter
Booking
Book everything early. Easter is one of the two peak travel periods in Greece (along with August). Popular island destinations — Patmos, Hydra, Corfu — fill up weeks or months in advance. Ferry tickets between islands and from Piraeus sell out. Restaurant reservations for Easter Sunday should be made well ahead.
What Closes
Good Friday is a public holiday — banks, government offices, and many shops close by midday. Easter Sunday and Easter Monday are full public holidays. Supermarkets and larger stores may remain open with reduced hours. Tourist-facing businesses in major destinations stay open throughout.
Getting Around
Ferries run on holiday schedules during Easter weekend — check the specific schedule well in advance and avoid tight connections. Athens Metro runs on holiday schedules on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Buses between cities run but on reduced frequency.
The Candle Rule
If you attend the midnight service, you will be given a candle or can buy one outside the church. The tradition is to keep it lit all the way home — protecting the flame with your hand, carrying it carefully — and to draw a cross with the smoke above your front door. You are not required to do this, but if you want to participate in the ritual as Greeks do, this is the gesture.

Greece in mid-April is warm and pleasant — typically 18–22°C in Athens and similar in most island and coastal areas. Rain is possible but unlikely. The evenings of Holy Week can be cool, especially if you are standing outside for the midnight service — bring an extra layer.
