Crete is the island that rewards ambition.
Not just in how much you try to see β though the island is large enough to fill a month without repetition β but in how you choose to experience it. The beaches, from the Caribbean-turquoise lagoon of Balos to the pink sands of Elafonissi, are among the most spectacular in Europe. The food is the foundation of the Mediterranean diet.
The gorges, the mountains, the Minoan palaces, the village life that hasn't changed in ways that matter β Crete is not a destination. It's a region.
And the hotel scene reflects this. Crete doesn't have a single style or a single price point. It has Venetian-mansion boutiques in Chania where the building is part of the story. It has five-star resorts in Elounda where every suite has a private pool and Spinalonga shimmers across the bay.
It has hillside retreats in Rethymno where a fortress broods above the rooftop pool. And it has waterfront guesthouses in Loutro where no road arrives and the hardest decision is which shade of blue the water is today.
This guide covers all four regions β because on Crete, where you stay is the single most consequential decision you'll make.
For the region-by-region area guide, read our where to stay in Crete. For the full island experience, see our Crete travel guide.

Western Crete: Chania & Rethymno
Western Crete has the most atmospheric hotel scene on the island β concentrated in the old towns of Chania and Rethymno, where Venetian architecture provides the canvas for some of the most characterful stays in Greece.
Casa Delfino (Chania)
The finest boutique hotel in Chania and one of the finest in all of Crete. A 17th-century Venetian mansion in the heart of the old town, with thirteen individually designed suites, original stonework, a courtyard pool, and a rooftop terrace with White Mountains views. The building is part of the experience β four centuries of history restored with intelligence and love. Breakfast on the rooftop, with Cretan cheese, thyme honey, and views of the mountains, is the kind of morning that redefines expectations.
Price range: β¬180β400/night
Best for: Couples, honeymooners, architecture lovers, anyone who values character over standardized luxury
Good to know: Rooms vary significantly β the Venetian bones mean no two are alike. No car access to the door; the hotel arranges luggage transfer through the narrow lanes. For more Chania options, see our best hotels in Chania guide.

Domus Renier (Chania)
A former Venetian nobleman's residence restored into a small luxury hotel directly on the harbor. The interiors are dressed with genuine antiques and original art. The harbor-view suites look out at the lighthouse and the colorful waterfront, and the service is polished and personal. If Casa Delfino is the warm mansion, Domus Renier is the refined palazzo.

Price range: β¬250β550/night
Best for: Luxury seekers, couples celebrating special occasions, art and history lovers
Good to know: Only a handful of suites β book well ahead. Harbor-front location means some evening noise from the restaurants below, which most guests consider atmosphere.

Rimondi Boutique Hotel (Rethymno)
Named after the Venetian Rimondi Fountain nearby, this boutique hotel occupies a restored mansion in Rethymno's most atmospheric quarter. Rooms are elegantly decorated β exposed stone, wooden beams, luxurious textiles β and the small courtyard pool is a welcome retreat from Crete's summer heat. The location, on a quiet lane steps from the fountain square, is ideal for the evening wandering that makes Rethymno so rewarding.

Rethymno sits midway between Chania and Heraklion, making it an excellent base for road trips in either direction. The town combines old-town character with a genuine sandy beach β a combination unique in western Crete.
Price range: β¬140β300/night
Best for: Couples, travelers wanting a quieter old-town base than Chania, road trippers exploring central Crete
Good to know: Old-town stairs and narrow corridors β not ideal for heavy luggage or mobility issues. The pool is small but atmospheric. The Fortezza fortress above the town is a five-minute walk.

Avli Lounge Apartments (Rethymno)
Connected to the celebrated Avli restaurant β one of the best in Crete β these apartment-style suites are set within restored Venetian buildings. Each unit has a kitchen, a living area, and design details that reflect Rethymno's layered history. Staying here puts you steps from one of Crete's best dinners and in the middle of an old town that reveals new details with every walk.
Price range: β¬120β280/night
Best for: Foodies, couples, families wanting space, longer stays
Good to know: The kitchens are useful, but with Avli downstairs, cooking feels almost disrespectful. Book the restaurant for at least one dinner β the modern Cretan cuisine using products from their own estate is exceptional.

Eastern Crete: Elounda & Agios Nikolaos
Eastern Crete is the luxury corridor β where the calm waters of Mirabello Bay, the silhouette of Spinalonga island, and some of Greece's finest resort hotels create an experience that belongs on a different register entirely.
Blue Palace Resort & Spa (Elounda)
The flagship resort of Elounda and one of the finest hotels in all of Greece. Set on a hillside facing Spinalonga, with a private beach, multiple pools, a spa, and rooms that range from elegant doubles to private villas with infinity pools hanging over the bay. The service is remarkable β attentive without being intrusive, the kind of hospitality that makes you feel simultaneously pampered and at home.

If you're celebrating something β a honeymoon, an anniversary, a milestone β this is the splurge. The setting on Mirabello Bay, with Spinalonga across the water and the Lasithi mountains behind, is one of the most beautiful hotel landscapes in the Mediterranean.
Price range: β¬300β1,200/night
Best for: Honeymooners, anniversary trips, luxury seekers, anyone for whom the hotel itself is a destination
Good to know: The hillside layout means walking or buggy rides between facilities. Half-board packages often represent better value than room-only. The Spinalonga boat dock is nearby β take the morning trip before the crowds.

Elounda Mare Hotel
A Relais & ChΓ’teaux property on the Elounda coast β more intimate and traditionally elegant than Blue Palace, with bungalows set in landscaped gardens that descend to a private beach. Many bungalows have private pools. The atmosphere is refined and understated β this is old-school Mediterranean luxury rather than contemporary design, and for many guests, that's precisely the appeal.
The restaurant serves Greek-Mediterranean cuisine of genuine quality. The spa is intimate and well-equipped. The beach is private and immaculate. Everything operates with the quiet confidence of a property that has been excellent for a long time and sees no reason to change.
Price range: β¬280β900/night
Best for: Couples seeking privacy and refinement, repeat Elounda visitors, travelers who prefer understated elegance
Good to know: The bungalow-with-pool option transforms the experience β the privacy is complete. The property is smaller and more intimate than Blue Palace, which is either an advantage or a limitation depending on what you want.

Elounda Bay Palace
The Elounda resort that works best for families. The grounds are manicured, the beach is private and well-serviced, and the family facilities β kids' club, separate pool, activities program β are genuine rather than tokenistic. Rooms and suites are spacious, and the all-inclusive option eliminates the financial anxiety that large-family dining can create.
Price range: β¬250β800/night
Best for: Families with children wanting five-star comfort, upscale family holidays
Good to know: Large resort β check room location at booking. The all-inclusive option is worth considering for families. See our best Greek islands for families for broader options.

Central Crete: Heraklion
GDM Megaron (Heraklion)
The best hotel in Heraklion and the obvious choice for travelers visiting Knossos and the Archaeological Museum. A five-star on the waterfront facing the Venetian harbor and the Koules Fortress, with a rooftop restaurant, a pool with panoramic views, and rooms that are well-appointed in a contemporary style. GDM Megaron is a world away from Heraklion's chaotic reputation β polished, convenient, and comfortable.

Price range: β¬150β350/night
Best for: History lovers visiting Knossos, travelers connecting to/from the airport or ferries, anyone wanting Heraklion at its best
Good to know: Harbor-facing rooms have better views but more street noise. The rooftop pool is a genuine luxury in Heraklion's summer heat. The Archaeological Museum is a ten-minute walk.

Capsis Astoria (Heraklion)
A reliable four-star in central Heraklion, walking distance from the Archaeological Museum, the market, and the harbor. Rooms are classic-hotel comfortable β well-maintained and spacious. The rooftop restaurant has good city views. A solid base for Knossos and the museums at honest mid-range prices.
Price range: β¬90β200/night
Best for: Budget-conscious travelers wanting a central Heraklion base, history enthusiasts, overnight stays near the airport
Good to know: Central location means urban noise. Heraklion is a working city, not a resort β embrace it for what it is. The bus to Knossos departs nearby.

The South Coast: Wild Crete
The south coast doesn't have luxury hotels, and that's entirely the point. What it has is something rarer: places where the experience of arriving β by boat, by hiking trail, by winding mountain road β is part of what makes the stay memorable.
Hotel Porto Loutro (Loutro)
Loutro is the jewel of Crete's south coast β a tiny cluster of white and blue buildings at the base of a cliff, accessible only by ferry or hiking trail. Hotel Porto Loutro sits directly on the waterfront with simple, clean rooms and balconies overlooking the bay. There's no luxury here β no pool, no spa, no room service. And that's the point. You come to Loutro to swim, eat, read, and rediscover what a holiday feels like when you strip away everything unnecessary.
Price range: β¬60β130/night
Best for: Adventure travelers, couples wanting isolation, anyone who wants Crete beyond the resorts
Good to know: No road access β arrive by ferry from Hora Sfakion (20 minutes) or hike the E4 trail. Pack light. Book ahead for JulyβAugust β Loutro is small and fills up.

Aris Hotel (Paleochora)
A friendly, family-run hotel on Paleochora's sandy beach, with simple rooms, a garden with hammocks, and the kind of relaxed atmosphere that makes you extend your stay. The beach is steps away, the town's tavernas are a short walk along the waterfront, and the price is remarkably honest for beachfront accommodation on Crete.

Price range: β¬50β120/night
Best for: Budget travelers, bohemian spirits, families wanting a genuine south-coast village experience
Good to know: Paleochora is about 75 minutes from Chania by car. The sandy beach (west side) is better for families; the pebble beach (east side) has calmer water when the wind blows.

Practical Tips for Crete Hotels
Fly into one airport, out the other. Crete has two main airports: Chania (CHQ) in the west and Heraklion (HER) in the east. The smartest strategy for a road trip is to fly into one and out the other β allowing you to drive across the island without backtracking. Most one-way car rentals accommodate this.
A rental car is essential. Crete is 260 km long. Even the best-located hotel is an hour or more from many of the island's highlights. The north coast highway is modern and fast. Mountain roads to the south coast are winding but well-surfaced. See our Greece road trip guide.
Split your stay. If you have a week or more, consider two bases β one in western Crete (Chania or Rethymno) and one in the east (Elounda or Agios Nikolaos). This lets you explore the island deeply without marathon daily drives.
When to visit. MayβJune and SeptemberβOctober are ideal. Crete stays warm into late October β swimming is comfortable when most other Greek islands have closed for the season. JulyβAugust are very hot (35β40Β°C) and peak-priced. See our Greece weather guide.
The food. Cretan cuisine is the best regional food in Greece. Key dishes: dakos (barley rusk with tomato, feta, olive oil), kalitsounia (cheese pies), lamb with stamnagathi (wild greens), and anything with local graviera cheese. The best restaurants are in villages and backstreets, not tourist zones. Raki is complimentary after nearly every meal β refusing it is technically legal.
Must-do experiences. Balos Beach, Elafonissi Beach, the Samaria Gorge, Knossos, and a drive through any mountain village. Book a Balos & Gramvousa cruise from Chania.
Budget. Crete is one of the best-value major destinations in Greece. Outside the Elounda luxury corridor, accommodation is significantly cheaper than the Cyclades. A good taverna meal for two with wine costs β¬30β50. The south coast is the most affordable area. See our cost guide.
