Skiathos crams more than 60 beaches onto an island twelve kilometres long, and almost all the good sandy ones sit on a single coast road served by one bus line, from the port at stop 0 to Koukounaries at stop 26. That one fact decides where you should sleep. A hotel near the right stop gives you the whole south coast for the price of a bus ticket; the wrong one leaves you in taxis.
The island splits cleanly. Skiathos Town has the harbour, the old port and the only real nightlife. Megali Ammos and Vassilias put a beach at your door and still let you walk to dinner. Achladies, Troulos and Agia Paraskevi are shallow, sheltered family bays. Koukounaries, with its pine forest and protected lagoon, is where the big resorts are. The north coast, with Lalaria's stone arch and the Kastro ruins, is boat-and-dirt-track territory, best visited rather than slept in.

Where to Stay in Skiathos: The Areas, Coast by Coast
Skiathos has one coast road and one bus line, and that decides more about your holiday than the star rating does. The bus runs from the port (stop 0) to Koukounaries (stop 26), and almost every south-coast beach has its own numbered stop. Pick the stretch of coast first, then the hotel.
Skiathos Town. The only place on the island where you can walk to dinner, the old port and the bars, and the airport is only about 2 km away. Best for couples, first-timers and short stays. The trade-off is summer night noise near the harbour and the longest ride to the famous beaches. Megali Ammos and Vassilias (stops 4 to 6). About 25 minutes' walk from town with a sandy beach at the door — the best compromise if you want both. Aegean Suites (adults only) and Nimfi Hotel, 30 metres from the sand, are at Megali Ammos; Kassandra Bay and the Golden King villas are at Vassilias.
Achladies, Kanapitsa and Vromolimnos (stops 9 to 13). The quieter middle of the coast, with sheltered bays and a short bus hop either way. This is where we would put a family that wants calm evenings. Esperides Beach sits right on Achladies bay.
Troulos, Agia Paraskevi and Platanias (Agia Paraskevi is stop 16). Shallow, organised beaches and mid-size resorts: the family heartland of the island. Princess Resort and Atrium are here, and La Luna Hotel in Troulos has sea-view apartments and a children's pool.
Koukounaries (stop 26, the end of the line). The famous beach, the pine forest and the protected Strofilia lagoon behind it. This is resort territory: Elivi and Skiathos Palace are the two big names, and Mandraki Village is the smaller option inside the protected area. Skiathos Town is about 10 km away, so plan your evenings around the bus.
Where not to stay without a car: the north coast and the interior. The coves up there are the best on the island, but the roads are dirt tracks and there is no useful bus. Book up there only if you have your own wheels.

Princess Resort (Skiathos Princess)
The island's most complete resort — a five-star property, now trading as Princess Resort, Santikos Collection, with direct access to Agia Paraskevi beach, extensive gardens, a large pool with hydromassage and the Harmony Club Spa. Adults-Only Hotels in Skiathos
Skiathos is a family island first, and the list of adults-only hotels is short. La Piscine Art Hotel in Skiathos Town is the one we would book without hesitation: it takes adults only, has an Olympic-size pool and sits a five-minute walk from the centre. Aegean Suites at Megali Ammos is the small five-star alternative. If both are full, the practical workaround is a small boutique property in town, where families rarely book because the beaches are a bus ride away.
All-Inclusive Hotels in Skiathos
All-inclusive exists on Skiathos, but it is mostly sold as a package-holiday board by the big tour operators rather than as a hotel's headline product, so check the board options on the listing or with your operator before you book. Our honest advice: on an island where a beach-taverna lunch costs little more than a hotel buffet, and the bus stops outside most resorts, half board usually gives you the better holiday.

Bourtzi Hotel
The most design-led hotel in Skiathos Town — a four-star property on Moraitou Street, right next to the town's main street, with a courtyard pool, a sun terrace and minimalist, soundproofed rooms with king-size beds. Most rooms have a balcony over the pool, and breakfast is served poolside.

Villas and Apartments
Many repeat visitors skip hotels altogether. Skiathos has a deep stock of family-run studios and apartments, especially around Troulos, Kolios and the old town, and a growing number of private-pool villas on the hills. Golden King Villas at Vassilias is the best-known: three-bedroom villas a few metres from Mikros Vassilias beach, each with a private pool and open sea views. For any villa or studio, check how far it is from the nearest numbered bus stop — the hills are steeper than the listing photos suggest.
Practical Tips for Skiathos Hotels
Getting there. Skiathos has an airport (JSI), about 2 km from town, with flights from Athens (about 40 minutes) and seasonal direct flights from UK and European cities. The runway ends right behind Xanemos beach, where plane-spotters gather to watch the famously low landings. Ferries run from Volos (1.5 hours by hydrofoil), from Thessaloniki (seasonal), and from Agios Konstantinos; Pelion is a short hop across the water from Volos.

Getting around. The bus service along the south coast is excellent — running every 15–20 minutes in summer from Skiathos Town to Koukounaries, stopping at all the major beaches. A car adds flexibility for the quieter coves but isn't essential for the main beaches. Lalaria and the north-coast sea caves are reached by excursion boat from the harbour; the other north-coast coves are down dirt tracks. The beaches. South coast (road-accessible, bus-served): Megali Ammos, Vassilias, Achladies, Kanapitsa, Troulos, Agia Paraskevi, Koukounaries, Banana Beach. North coast: Lalaria (boat access only — the dramatic pebble beach with the stone arch) and Kastro (medieval fortress ruins above the sea, by boat or on foot).
