It works poorly for operational details, restaurant recommendations, anything time-sensitive, and the specific local knowledge that makes the difference between a good plan and a great trip. For Greece specifically, the gap between AI capability and real-world accuracy is larger than for most European destinations because of the country's complexity โ€” the ferry system, the seasonal variation, the difference between tourist reality and actual Greece.

I should be upfront about something. I have a stake in this topic. I built an AI travel planning tool for Greece. Ask ChatGPT or Claude to explain the difference between Mykonos and Naxos, or what makes the Delphi archaeological site worth visiting, or what the Santorini caldera actually is geologically โ€” and you get accurate, well-sourced, intelligently explained answers.

This is training-data-based knowledge that does not go stale. The Acropolis of Athens is the same in 2026 as it was in 2022; the description of it in training data is accurate. The mythology of Delphi is unchanged. The character of the Cyclades versus the Ionian Islands is stable.

For general knowledge about Greece โ€” its history, geography, culture, cuisine, and the character of different destinations โ€” AI is an excellent research tool.

3. Answering General Planning Questions

"How many days should I spend in Athens?" "Is Santorini or Mykonos more suitable for a history-focused visitor?" "What is the Meltemi wind and how does it affect ferry crossings?" โ€” AI handles these questions well, drawing on a large and generally accurate body of travel writing and expert advice.

The answers are not infallible, but they are broadly correct and significantly more useful than a generic search engine result page. For general orientation questions โ€” the kind that a friend who had visited Greece would answer โ€” AI is a reliable and fast resource.

4. Personalising to Your Interests

Given a clear brief โ€” travel style, interests, budget level, specific constraints โ€” AI produces itineraries that are more tailored than any generic guidebook. Tell it "we are specifically interested in Minoan archaeology and Byzantine art, we do not enjoy beach tourism, and we want to avoid crowded tourist sites" and it will produce a Greece itinerary that does not include Santorini, emphasises Crete (Knossos, Akrotiri, Heraklion Museum), includes Thessaloniki (Byzantine churches, the Rotunda, the Arch of Galerius), and probably adds Mystras in the Peloponnese.

That itinerary โ€” specific, interest-aligned, avoiding the tourist defaults โ€” would take hours of independent research to produce. AI produces it in minutes.

What AI Gets Wrong for Greece Trip Planning

1. Restaurant Recommendations

Restaurant recommendations from general-purpose AI should be treated as potentially unreliable in any destination, and Greece specifically is a high-risk category. Greece has a large number of tourist-facing restaurants that appear frequently in online content alongside genuinely good local restaurants that do not. AI trained on this content cannot reliably distinguish between the two. It also cannot know which restaurants have opened, closed, or changed since its training cutoff.

The pattern seen repeatedly: AI recommends a specific Athens restaurant with apparent confidence; the restaurant either no longer exists, has moved, or has changed significantly from the description. The AI has no way to know this.

What to use instead: Google Maps reviews filtered to the past 6 months. Greek food communities on Reddit (r/greece, r/hellascuisine). Local recommendations from accommodation staff. This site's neighbourhood guides (which are maintained) for the best-current-options-by-area.

2. Ferry Times and Inter-Island Logistics

Greece's ferry system is one of the most complex in Europe โ€” dozens of operators, seasonal schedules that change by month, routes that run daily in July and weekly in October, and specific booking systems that require advance planning. General-purpose AI typically handles this badly in the same way: it collapses complex, variable information into simplified generic guidance.

Common AI ferry mistakes observed: collapsing high-speed and conventional ferry times into a single imprecise range; recommending routes that run infrequently or not in the visitor's travel season; missing the car-booking-required-in-advance issue for peak summer travel; not mentioning that specific morning departures on popular routes sell out.

3. Booking Requirements and Advance Planning

This is the AI error category with the most real-world consequences. AI consistently fails to communicate which experiences in Greece require advance booking โ€” not because it is wrong that the experience exists, but because it does not flag the operational constraint that makes it actually accessible.

Confirmed AI booking-requirement failures for Greece: the Acropolis (โ‚ฌ30 ticket now requires online advance booking; morning slots in June-August fill 3โ€“5 days ahead), Santorini sunset catamaran cruises (sell out 1โ€“2 weeks ahead in summer), ferry car spaces on major summer routes (need booking weeks ahead), popular Athenian restaurants (1โ€“2 week advance booking needed in peak season), and the Scorpios beach club Sunset Ritual (advance reservation essential in July-August).

An AI itinerary that says "take a catamaran cruise at sunset from Santorini" is technically correct โ€” that experience exists and is worthwhile. An AI itinerary that also says "book this 2 weeks ahead for any date in July or August" is operationally useful. Most general-purpose AI only does the former.

4. Opening Hours and Operational Details

Many Greek archaeological sites and museums have changed their opening hours in recent years โ€” the Acropolis combined ticket (which covered multiple sites) was discontinued in 2025, replaced by standalone tickets for each major site. Hours at secondary sites change seasonally. Some sites close Monday; others close Tuesday. The details vary and shift.

AI trained before these changes will produce outdated information with no caveat. The Acropolis combined ticket discontinuation is a specific example: as of 2025, visitors can no longer buy a single ticket covering the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora, the Roman Agora, Kerameikos, and other sites. This is new information that post-dates many AI systems' training data, and the wrong advice here costs real money.

What to use instead: The official Hellenic Ministry of Culture website (odysseus.culture.gr) for current hours and ticket prices at all archaeological sites. Specific attraction websites for current operational status.

5. The Mykonos-Santorini Default

This is the systematic bias most visible in AI Greece planning: trained on a corpus of internet content that disproportionately represents the most-written-about destinations, AI defaults to Santorini and Mykonos in almost every itinerary regardless of fit.

A visitor who says "we want to see ancient Greek history, we prefer quiet uncrowded places, and we enjoy good local food" should probably be recommended Naxos, the Peloponnese, Crete (away from tourist centres), and possibly Thessaloniki. AI will often still recommend Santorini and Mykonos because those names appear in orders of magnitude more content than Naxos or Nafplio or Vikos.

This is not a failure of intelligence; it is a training data distribution problem. The internet knows Santorini much better than it knows Naxos, so AI recommendations reflect the internet rather than the optimal answer.

6. What Is Currently Closed or Changed

Post-training-cutoff changes are invisible to AI without real-time data access. For Greece, this category includes: seasonal closures (many island businesses close October-April), post-earthquake or disaster-related closures (Greece has seismic activity), scheduled restoration work at major sites, and changes in transport connections (new routes, discontinued routes, changed ferry operators).

AI has no mechanism to know that the Acropolis was partially closed for restoration work, or that a ferry operator changed its schedule for a particular route, or that a favourite restaurant closed last November. For static information (the history of the Acropolis, the character of the Ionian Islands), this does not matter. For operational planning, it matters a great deal.

How to Get the Best Results from AI for Greece Planning

Understanding AI's capabilities and limitations suggests a practical workflow that makes the most of the genuine advantages while avoiding the real failures.

Step 1: Use AI for the initial brief
Describe your trip clearly: dates, duration, travel style, interests, budget level, specific constraints. Let AI generate a first-draft framework โ€” day-by-day structure, island choices, site sequencing. Treat this as a starting hypothesis.

Step 2: Verify the structure against current knowledge
Check that the island and city choices align with your actual interests (not just the AI's defaults). Verify that the suggested sequence is logistically feasible. Look at the ferry connections suggested โ€” do they actually run on the dates you need?

Step 3: Use specialist resources for operational details
Ferry schedules: Ferryhopper. Ticket booking: official Ministry of Culture portal. Restaurant recommendations: local food resources, recent reviews. Any "must-book-in-advance" experience: verify the booking requirement and do it immediately.

Step 4: Use a Greece-specific tool for the final iteration

Prompt Engineering Tips for Better AI Results

If you are using general-purpose AI, these prompt techniques consistently improve output quality:

Be specific about your interests. "I am interested in ancient Greek history and archaeology, Byzantine art, and authentic local food. I am not interested in beach clubs, nightlife, or luxury hotels" produces much more targeted output than "I want to see the best of Greece."

Specify what you want verified. "Flag any experience that typically requires advance booking in summer" is a useful instruction โ€” AI will add more caveats when asked to think about booking requirements.

Ask for alternatives to the defaults. "Suggest an alternative to Santorini that might be better for someone interested in archaeology and authentic local culture" will produce a more personalised recommendation than the standard itinerary.

Ask about logistics explicitly. "What is the realistic journey time between Athens and Naxos by ferry, and are there specific things about the ferry booking I need to know?" forces the AI to address the operational dimension it often skips.

Request the negative information. "What are the most common planning mistakes first-time visitors to Greece make?" produces some of AI's most useful Greece-specific output โ€” its training data contains a large volume of travel advice about what not to do, and this query retrieves it.

The Case for Greece-Specific AI

The gap between what general-purpose AI does and what specialist knowledge does is most visible in Greece because of the country's complexity. The ferry system alone โ€” 227 inhabited islands, dozens of operators, seasonal schedules โ€” is a specialised knowledge domain that general training data handles imprecisely.

These questions can be answered faster, cheaper, and often more accurately by AI than by a general travel agent who is not a Greece specialist.

What AI has not replaced โ€” and cannot replace with current technology โ€” is:

The specific local knowledge that does not exist in training data. The taverna in Psiri with no English reviews that is consistently the best meal in Athens. The ferry route that technically exists on the schedule but rarely runs on time and should be avoided. The advice to book Scorpios in June, not in August, because the June crowd is better and the booking is easier.

Real-time operational awareness. Whether the site is closed today. Whether the ferry is running. Whether the restaurant has the dish you want. Current conditions require current data.

Judgment about fit. Knowing, from having worked with hundreds of visitors with similar profiles, that this particular type of traveller will love Naxos and be disappointed by Santorini โ€” and having the conviction to make that recommendation against the visitor's initial instinct.

AI is getting better at each of these categories. Real-time data access (web search tools in AI assistants) helps with current conditions. Fine-tuned specialist models with curated knowledge bases help with specific local accuracy. But the gap remains meaningful in 2026, particularly for a destination as operationally complex as Greece.

The practical conclusion: use AI well, know what it cannot do, and supplement it with the specialist knowledge โ€” from this site, from local experts, from specialist tools โ€” that closes the operational gaps.
